In Thousands of Pounds |

Bayou Steel Corporation is one of the largest recyclers in Louisiana and remains committed to environmental protection. The steelmaking facility, which began operations in 1981, recycled over 1.3 billion pounds of scrap metal in 2006. The shredder facility, which began operations in 1995, recycled over 170 million pounds of scrap metal in 2006. Much of this scrap metal, including automobiles and discarded appliances, would be littering the streets and occupying valuable landfill space were it not recycled.
In 2006, Bayou Steel was recertified to the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. This is a voluntary management system for environmental programs that is continually verified by external, independent auditors. Bayou Steel was the first electric arc furnace steel manufacturer to be ISO 14001 certified in 1996. Bayou Steel is also certified to the ISO 9002 Standard for Quality Management Systems.
The off-site emissions reported are transfers of “shredded fluff”, including foam and fabric from automobile seats, dashboards, and other plastic parts from automobiles and appliances. The majority of this off-site transfer is in the form of zinc which is properly landfilled.
Bayou Steel employees approximately 488 persons, as well as 25 full-time contractors. Of the 488 employees, 238 live in the tri-parish area. Bayou Steel has operated in St. John Parish for 26 years.
