For over 40 years, DuPont has been dedicated to educational activities and positively contributing to the local economy. DuPont’s 147 employees and 70 contractors are involved in numerous community and professional organizations in the area. PPDA, the main product made by DuPont at the Pontchartrain facility is used to produce Kevlar ™ used in bullet-resistant vests that have saved the lives of many police officers and military personnel. Production of a second product, IPDA, used in the manufacture of automobile clear coatings and OPDA, used to produce fungicides.
Production in 2006 increased 15% compared with 2005. This resulted in a 9% increase in TRI chemicals compared to 2005. Air emissions increased 28%, primarily due to a 49% increase in IPDA production. Land emissions increased 11% due to a 7% increase in PPDA production. Off-site disposal decreased 58%, primarily due to an improvement in water treatment.
DuPont is committed to protecting the environment and the safety and health of the community and our employees. DuPont complies with federal and state environmental regulations and annually certifies its compliance to EPA and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Protection. DuPont has completed an OSHA audit to achieve VPP Star status. Achieving Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star status means OSHA recognizes the facility has an exemplary, comprehensive safety and health management system.
